Character Building: Figural Workshop and Demonstration with Sergei Isupov

Overview
Project Art is located at 54 Main Street in Cummington, MA, 01026.
The weekend workshop runs from 9am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, and 9 – 11am on Monday. The workshop begins on Saturday with a two hour demonstration of slab building and sculpting techniques for developing character and expression. After a break for lunch, students will work in the studio with Isupov to focus on slab construction. Sunday begins with a morning demonstration of painting and surface techniques followed by the afternoon in the studio with Isupov. The studio is open to students until 8pm. Monday will provide time to review and complete works and make arrangements for shipping.
Open to participants age 18 and above, and students of all experience levels are welcome.

Tuition and Payment
Tuition for the 3 day workshop is $400 per person
A $100 deposit is due with registration, and the full payment is due by October 15th, 2024. Deposits and tuition will be accepted via Venmo or Check.
Special tools will be available for purchase.
Housing and Meals
Housing and meals are not provided. It is the responsibility of each student to arrange housing and meals independently.
Prepared meals & groceries are available nearby at the Old Creamery.
Travel
Hartford, CT (airport code BDL) and Albany, NY (airport code ALB) are the two closest regional airports. Cummington is a rural community, and we recommend participants rent a car or drive to us. There is no public transportation in the Cummington area. The slosest gas station is 20 minutes away, so make sure to fill up before you arrive.
Cancellation Policy
Your deposit is not refundable.
Tuition is refundable until October 30th, 2024. After October 30th, we cannot offer a refund unless we are able enroll a replacement from the waiting list. If we are able to replace you with a participant from the waiting list, your tuition refund will be issued.

Isupov’s ceramic sculptures on view in the gallery at Project Art trace his career with works made in studios throughout the world (Estonia, Hungary, and the USA) and date from 1990 – present.
In 2006, Sergei Isupov moved to Cummington, MA to establish Project Art with Leslie Ferrin, director of Ferrin Contemporary. Arriving in the USA in 1994 from Estonia, he lived in Kentucky, Virginia and now, for 17 years in Cummington. Isupov was joined by his wife, Kadri Pärnamets from Estonia in 2008. Their daughter Roosi, now 13, grew up at Project Art and is also creating artwork in the family’s shared studio. Sergei’s family who still live in Kyiv, Ukraine, are also producing artists.
Isupov’s reputation is international, both as a sculptor and teacher. He is highly sought after by students who seek him out from throughout the world to take workshops and participate in his performance based fire sculptures. Isupov’s works are shown and collected in museums throughout the world. A recent mosaic 10′ high sculpture “Miss Comet” was produced in 2022 with shards donated by the community and is now on view permanently on Main Street in the newly designated Cummington Cultural District, the first awarded to a small, rural community by Mass Cultural Council.
Sergei Isupov will give a tour of Project Art and speak about his work each day, September 30 and October 1 at 1 pm at Project Art at 54 Main Street, Cummington. Isupov’s ceramic sculptures on view in the gallery at Project Art trace his career with works made in studios throughout the world (Estonia, Hungary, and in the USA) and date from 1990 – present. The talk will run for 45 minutes and is limited to 30 people each day.

Miss Comet is taking shape outside of his studio at Project Art in Cummington,an exhibition of sculpture titled Past and Present recently opened at Ferrin Contemporary (with and upcoming artist talk on June 4th), and a huge public sculpture firing and performance event with a satellite solo show at TurnPark Art Space.

Sergei Isupov Prints and T-Shirts
Sergei Isupov created a special print for his recent workshop, Eyes, Lips and Ears: Techniques of Decorating and Painting. He is offering this image as both a t-shirt and a print on paper. Using a traditional linoleum print process, each print and t-shirt is produced by the artist.

Sergei Isupov Virtual Workshop with the 92nd Street Y

Join internationally acclaimed sculptor Sergei Isupov for a series of demonstrations titled Eyes, Lips and Ears: Techniques for Modeling and Painting.

The Zoom-format program will be streamed live from Sergei’s studio at Project Art in in Cummington, MA. Participants will be able to ask questions via chat throughout the program.
Registered students will receive links to a written tools and materials list and to the recording of the event. If you sign up for the class, you will be able to watch the recording at a later time even if you are not available for the live-stream.
The demonstration will take place over three days, with each demonstration lasting two hours, including the Q&A session. Day 1 will cover eyes, day 2 lips, and day 3 ears.
Each session will have three parts:
- Techniques for forming an eye, lip or ear from a clay slab. (one feature per day)
- Refining by smoothing and defining the features.
- Highlighting details with color and shading, using underglazes and glazes to bring the sculpted features to life.
Livestream demonstration with Sergei Isupov, January 23, 2021
Join internationally acclaimed sculptor Sergei Isupov for a livestream demonstration titled THE NARRATIVE CUP. The program will include a 1.5 hour demonstration, followed by a ½ hour Question and Answers. The demonstration will cover techniques of slab construction and manipulation, underglaze painting, and glaze application. Sergei will discuss using the full surface of the cup to illustrate a personal narrative.
The demonstration will take place on Zoom. Participation will be limited to 50 attendees. A link will be sent out to participants after they have registered and purchased a ticket. Two identical sessions will be offered of the Narrative Cup to allow participants to watch and participate live from various time zones. Session one will be on Friday January 22nd, 2021 at 6PM EST (New York). Session two will be on Saturday January 23, 2021 at 12 p.m. EST (New York).
