Overview
This workshop will cover the construction of large forms using thin clay slabs that allow for flexibility of movement while maintaining scale.
The workshop begins on Saturday with a series of sketches and demonstrations led by Sergei Isupov. After lunch, students will use prepared slabs to build large-form constructions. Sergei will share his personal tips on how best to prepare the work surface, recommend use and types of various clay materials and how to determine moisture allowance to support large-form construction. Limited to six, students will have ample space and receive individual attention to address the challenges of building large sculptures. Students will work freely in the studio to build the initial form, while Sergei provides short lectures and demonstrations on how to incorporate details and individual facial features: lips, eyes, eats, and noses.
On Sunday, students will bring their forms to a near-complete stage and in the afternoon, begin to prepare for surface painting. Sergei will provide a demonstration on effective glazing techniques.
The sculptures will be bisqued after the workshop for students who would like to continue working on their piece. Once bisqued, students can choose to have their work shipped (additional cost applies) or arrange to pick-up their work in the weeks following the workshop.
The studio is open to students until 8pm.
Open to participants age 18 and above, and students at an intermediate-advanced experience level.
Limited to 6 participants

MORE ON SERGEI ISUPOV
Sergei Isupov is an Estonian-American sculptor internationally known for his highly detailed, narrative works. Isupov explores painterly figure-ground relationships, creating surreal sculptures with a complex artistic vocabulary that combines two- and three-dimensional narratives and animal/human hybrids. He works in ceramics using traditional hand-building and sculpting techniques to combine surface and form with narrative painting using colored stains highlighted with clear glaze.
