FLESHING: Figurative Sculpture Workshop with Cristina Córdova

July 29th – August 4th, 2018

WORKSHOP FULL – wait list slots available. To be added to the wait list, email a completed registration form to info (at) projectart01026.com

Join Cristina Córdova for FLESHING: a figurative sculpture workshop. This workshop will cover basic concepts of anatomy and proportion to create figurative sculptures built with slabs and finished with slips and underglaze transfers. Córdova will discuss preliminary construction strategies using drawings, photos, and models as well as conceptual catalysts to strengthen the sculptural proposal. Demonstrations will include the construction of head, torso, arms, and hands, as well as techniques that reveal how to optimize the clarity and expression of a figure in clay. Students will explore the possibilities of laminating their sculpture with color and patterns through the use of slips and transfers to create vibrant, dynamic surfaces before bisque. The main objective will be the construction of a ceramic torso between 15-25“ h, and Córdova will also discuss how to use these techniques to construct the complete figure at different scales through the use of simple reinforcements and supports and clay body variations.

Cristina Córdova received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez and continued to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In 2002 she entered a three year artists residency program at Penland School of Crafts where she later served in the board of trustees from 2006 to 2010.

Recognitions include a 2015 USA Artist Fellowship, an American Crafts Council Emerging Artist Grant, a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship, a Virginia Groot Foundation Recognition Grant and several International Association of Art Critics Awards. Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington , D.C.), the Fuller Craft Museum (MA), the Mint Museum of Craft and Design (NC), the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (PR), the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico (PR), and the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum (NY).
